Maria was helping her mother, who was suffering from the stage 4 brain cancer. It was discovered that she was suffering from the middle of a health crisis. In February 2014 Menounos started experiencing troubling symptoms. "I'd felt lightheaded while on set, and was suffering from headaches," the actress tells PEOPLE in its exclusive issue. The results of an MRI revealed Menounos suffered from a large golf ball-sized meningioma brain tumor pushing into her facial nerves. Menounos scheduled an appointment to meet her mother's neurosurgeon Dr. Keith L. Black. Surgery was scheduled to take place on June 8, Menounos 39th birthday. The doctor said the surgery was 98 percent safe. However, we wouldn't be able to know until the time they reach. After the lengthy surgery which lasted about seven hours the surgeon Dr. Black was able to remove 99.9 percent of the tumor.
